Student Life

The Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI), Universiti Sains Malaysia is the only medical postgraduate institute in Malaysia.Through our national and international research network and clinical partnership, we offer taught and research postgraduate programmes in niche medical, dental and health care related areas. The Master of Science (MSc), Master of Medicine (MMed) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in AMDI are designed to train scientists and clinicians that produce innovative scientific and clinical discoveries towards sustainable and holistic healthcare deliveries.

Life at AMDI

Estimated Cost of Living

Depending on the needs and lifestyle of each student, a foreign student would require US$5,000 per year for food, accommodation, books and other expenses (exclusive of tuition fees)

Food / Meals: USD150/month
(USD5 a day, 3 meals)

Academic Expenses: USD100/month
(books, stationeries, etc.)

Personal Expenses: USD100-150/month

Health Insurance: Subject to insurance agreement

On-Campus Accommodation

On-Campus Accommodation in USM Main Campus (Penang Island) is equipped with a single room or twin sharing room. Rental for on-campus accommodation is from USD30-USD75 per month (without meals). AMDI registered students are entitled for shuttle from Main Campus to AMDI, Bertam Campus (35 KM in distance).

Off-Campus Accommodation

Off-Campus Accommodation is the rental of private accommodation within 3 KM in radius of AMDI (Bertam Campus) and is the most preferred choice by AMDI research students. Most of the single/double storey houses are equipped with 3 bedrooms. Rental for this accommodation is from USD75-USD125 per month (not including utilities) for each room. It’s very close to shopping mall, mosque and laundry and grocery outlet.

Recreational and Leaisure Activities

In-Campus

  • Post graduate students can get involve with the AMDI Postgraduate Student Association
  • Futsal pitch (in front of CTC, near main gate)
  • AMDI Gymnasium (reasonable fees)
  • Archery (bullseye near field beside CTC)
  • Jogging track around the campus (with exercise and stretching stations near ARC)
  • Bird watching (eagles near ARC pond)
  • Fishing (near ARC pond)
  • Kite Playing (open ground and windy area behind CTC)
  • Temasya Olahraga Tahunan USM (TOT) USM (Track and Field/Annual Athletic Event)
  • Indoor games (chess, table tennis, carom)

Off-Campus

  • Badminton session (weekly event amongst staff and students at Kompleks Sukan Pinang Tunggal approximately 5 minutes/ 2 km away from AMDI)
  • Hiking and Camping (Penang Hill or Gunung Jerai, 45 minutes away)
  • Beach and Waterfall (Batu Feringgi; 1 hour, Pantai Merdeka, Lubuk Tupah; 45 minutes)
  • Bowling (Mega Lane Bowling Center at Megamall; 20 minutes)
  • Cycling (many beautiful paddy fields around the area)
  • Movie (theater in Sunshine Mall)

Student Association

AMDI Student Associacion (ASA)
The association consists of student committee representatives which has both taught and research degree student members. The ASA officially formed in March 2016 is run by students, for students. Our student representatives seek students’ views on issues of concern and identify issues to raise with Faculty and Registry staff.

We also organise social activities for research students throughout the yearto help the new postgraduate students settle in; an annual cross-site away weekend which provides further opportunity for students to get to know each other; and an annual student conference, focussed on careers advice and personal development, which is followed by a social event. How to get to and around AMDI?

AMDI is in Bertam Campus, one of the Universiti Sains Malaysia campus and it is located at Bertam, Kepala Batas, Pulau Pinang. It is 3.9 km from Bertam uptown and 35 km from the USM main campus. Check out our public transport guide.

1.    By air:

offer daily flight from Kuala Lumpur to Penang Island. The AMDI USM is located at the main land and you could grab a taxi to reach our research institute.

2.    By train:

offers daily trip from Kuala Lumpur Central to Butterworth station, Pulau Pinang. Butterworth station is 27.5 km from AMDI USM. Taxi services are available at the train station.

3.    By bus:
Express buses are available from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth. The express busses from other locations in Peninsular Malaysia are also available at reasonable cost.

  • Former Malaysia's 5th Prime Minister's House

    This is the house where Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi grew up with his parents, Haji Ahmad Badawi and Dato' Kailan. Do visit if you find the time. 

  • Daeratul Maarif Wataniah

    Founded by Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's grandfather, Haji Abdullah Fahim, it has produced some excellent scholars.

  • Jamiul Badawi Mosque

    Built by Haji Abdullah Fahim for religious functions and teachings, the mosque together with the school and his house became the gathering place for students from all over the country.

  • Paddy Fields

    Malaysia is a blessed country for being an advanced country and one which thrives on its scenic agricultural sector, such as paddy fields.

  • Penang Golf Resort

    For golf enthusiasists, there's a place for you too. Situated just at the highway exit, you will not miss this resort.

  • Malaysian Agricultural Research and Developement Institute

    Established 40 years ago, MARDI supports the agricultural sector in Malaysia. 

  • Millenium Hall

    For those new to this area, Millenium Hall is the focal point for an array of colourful events in Kepala Batas. Events such as weddings, convocations, meetings and public speeches are constantly being held here.

  • Educational Institute

    Institutions such as elementary schools, high schools, MRSM, AUCMS and ILP are here to provide the best feeder of human capital for Malaysia.

  • Hotels

    Kepala Batas has some great hotels for tourists, which offers a wide variety of facilities and amenities. The hotels in Kepala Batas have the added beauty of history.

  • Banks

    If you need to withdraw, deposit money, or perform other financial transactions, there are plenty of financial institutions around town.

  • Shopping Malls

    Should you feel the need to satisfy your shopping addiction, or if you need to purchase some amenities or goods, there are various shopping malls around Kepala Batas that will satisfy your needs.

  • Food Complexs

    If you are famished and wish to enjoy good food in the company of others, there are large food complexes around town that will satisfy your hunger pangs. Some are fast food outlets like McDonalds and some are traditional food outlets. 
  • Nursery

    If you have small children, nurseries are widespread around Kepala Batas. Many different services for toddlers and children are provided in these nurseries to occupy them for the day while their parents are hard at work.
